Mitchell: 'We won't let Joe's legacy die' (AP)

Former Penn State star Lydell Mitchell visited Joe Paterno about a week and a half ago, hoping to get just a moment with his ailing coach.

After an emotional hour and a half, Mitchell said goodbye and told Paterno that he would always have the support of his players.

"I said, `Hey, man, we love you.' We'll fight the fight for him," Mitchell said Sunday after Paterno died at age 85.

"Joe's legacy will always be intact because we won't let Joe's legacy die," said Mitchell, who played running back at Penn State from 1968-72.

Paterno won more games (409) than any coach in major college football history during 46 seasons at Penn State.

"I think history will say that he's one of the greatest," former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden, second on the wins list, told The Associated Press. "Who's coached longer? Who's coached better? Who's won more games? Who's been more successful than Joe? Who's done more for his university than Joe? You've lost one of the greatest. He probably means the same thing up there that Bear Bryant meant down here. He's an icon."

Paterno died from complications of lung cancer less than three months after he was ousted amid a child sex abuse scandal involving one of his former assistants.

"It's just sad because I think he died from other things than lung cancer," former Penn State tight end Mickey Shuler said.

Paterno began his coaching career at Penn State in 1950 as an assistant coach under Rip Engle.

That's when Pro Football Hall of Famer Lenny Moore played for the Nittany Lions. Moore joined Mitchell ? they both played for the Colts and live in Baltimore ? for that trip to State College a couple weeks back.

Moore said he, Mitchell, Paterno and Paterno's wife, Sue, sat around the kitchen table and talked until it got dark and the visitors needed to get back.

"We talked the whole time and he was very together," Moore said. "Didn't look like he was having any pain. We told him we loved him and we left.

"I'm glad that we had the opportunity to do it. And I was glad that I told him how I felt about him."

Mike Guman, who played fullback for Penn State in the late 1970s, said the Paterno's legacy will be carried on by the many people whose lives he has touched.

"Football's a small part of his legacy, but it goes far beyond that," he said. "You could have become a good football player at many places but you wouldn't have become the man you are if you didn't go to Penn State."

Guman said he didn't think Paterno was treated fairly at the end of his time at Penn State and Mitchell agreed.

"They knew Joe was going to retire (at the end of last season)," Mitchell said "They could have let that play out but I think they panicked and jumped the gun."

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said he was fortunate to have developed a personal relationship with Paterno over the last few years. In Meyer's last game at Florida, his Gators beat Penn State.

"We have lost a remarkable person and someone who affected the lives of so many people in so many positive ways," Meyer said in statement. "His presence will be dearly missed. His legacy as a coach, as a winner and as a champion will carry on forever."

WWE responds to Conn. Senate candidate's criticism (AP)

STAMFORD, Conn. ? WWE professional wrestling is accusing Connecticut Senate candidate Chris Shays of making untrue accusations about the company once run by Linda McMahon, a fellow Republican vying for the party's nomination.

Shays told The Associated Press recently that McMahon was "basically in the soft-core porn business."

WWE spokesman Robert Zimmerman released a letter to Shays on Monday, saying the former congressman visited the company's headquarters and supported its SmackDown Your Vote campaign, which encouraged young people to register.

Zimmerman also cited WWE's efforts to combat bullying, contrary to Shays' claims WWE promotes bullying.

Shays spokeswoman Amanda Bergen says books and articles have been written about WWE and "the facts are the facts." Bergen says McMahon can't talk about her business experience without talking about her business.

Nigeria tense after Islamists kill at least 178

A spokesman for the Islamist group Boko Haram claimed responsibility for Friday's attacks in the northern Nigeria city of Kano.?

Nigeria?s second-largest city was on alert Sunday as the death toll continued to climb from a series of coordinated bombings and shootings in Kano Friday night.

A spokesman for a militant Islamist group known as Boko Haram claimed responsibility for what was one of the most violent attacks attributed to the group yet. A doctor in Kano?s main hospital said the number of dead had reached 178 and could go higher, reports Reuters. The group is stepping up its attacks, and the Nigerian government appears unable to put an end to the violence.?

Nigeria?s president declared a state of emergency in four states on Dec. 31, after Boko Haram bombed churches on Christmas day, killing 44 people. The group also carried out an attack on the United Nations headquarters in in Nigeria August that killed 24 people. Most of its attacks have taken place in Nigeria?s northeast. Kano is a northern city.

The country, which is the most populous nation in Africa, is predominantly Muslim in the north, where poverty is more widespread, and mostly Christian in the south. The geographic split by religion has been a point of tension in the past, something Boko Haram appears bent on exploiting in its bid to undermine the government.?

The group was founded in 2002 by Islamic preacher Mohammed Yusuf. As the Monitor reported, it is focused on resistance to the Nigerian government, and ?what many northern Nigerians see as the dominant role that Christian Nigerians play in Nigerian politics.? Boko Haram, which means ?Western education is sin,? is an unofficial name for the group referring to its belief that Western influences corrupt traditional Islamic societies. The group?s official name is Jama?atul Ahlu Sunna Lidda?Awati wal Jihad, or the People Committed to the Prophet?s Teachings for Propagation and Jihad.

Security forces manned roadblocks around Kano Sunday, reports The Associated Press. A 24-hour curfew was reduced to night-time hours but streets were deserted as Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan was expected to visit the city in the wake of the deadly attacks.

The violence began Friday evening, when at least 20 explosions targeted eight buildings, including a police headquarters, immigration offices, state security headquarters, and a passport office. CNN reports that militants entered a police station and freed detainees before bombing it. After the bombings, attackers drove through the city in a car and on motorcycles, shooting. ?

The Wall Street Journal reports that a spokesman for the group said it had freed some of its members who had been held without trial. A spokesman for the group told Nigerian newspaper the Daily Trust that the attacks were in response to ?the refusal of the Kano state government to release some of their members who had been arrested in the state.?

Last week, the group?s alleged mastermind of a deadly Christmas day bombing targeting a church?escaped police custody during a prison transfer.

Meanwhile, nine people from a Christian ethnic group were also killed early Sunday morning in the town of Tafawa Balewa in apparent religious violence, reports The Daily Telegraph. A traditional elder of a Christian ethnic group told the paper that witnesses blamed the attack on a Muslim ethnic group.

Republican debate brings out aggression in candidates

Republican debate getting spicy:?South Carolina held the latest?Republican debate and the candidates didn't hold their punches. ?While Romney says the candidates should focus on Obama, he and the others took more jabs than usual at each other in this debate.

The race for the Republican presidential nomination took a turn toward the South Carolina surreal Thursday as Rick Perry dropped out, Newt Gingrich faced stunning allegations from an ex-wife and Mitt Romney struggled to maintain a shaky front-runner's standing.

An aggressive evening debate capped the bewildering day.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum played aggressor for much of the night, trying to inject himself into what seemed increasingly like a two-way race with little more than a day remaining until the South Carolina polls open on Saturday. He accused Gingrich and Romney of "playing footsies with the left" when it came to health care. Both men rejected the allegations.

The debate began a few hours after first word that Romney had been stripped of his Iowa caucus victory, only to be stung a few hours later by Perry's withdrawal and endorsement of Gingrich.

Gingrich, in turn, was accused by an ex-wife of seeking an open marriage so he could keep his mistress.

"Newt's not perfect, but who among us is," said Perry, abruptly quitting the race just before the first-in-the-South primary.

His decision to end a once-promising candidacy left Romney, Gingrich, Santorum and Texas Rep. Ron Paul the remaining contenders in the race to pick a Republican to challenge Democratic President Barack Obama this fall.

Nine hours after Perry exited one stage, the four remaining contenders walked onto another for a final pre-primary debate.

Gingrich angrily denounced the news media for putting his ex-wife front and center in the final days of the race. "Let me be clear, the story is false," he said. Santorum, Romney and Paul steered well clear of the controversy. "Let's get onto the real issues, that's all I've got to say," said Romney, although he pointed out that he and his wife, Ann, have been married for 42 years.

The audience gave Gingrich a standing ovation when he assailed the media, a reaction he can only hope is reflected in voter sentiment on Saturday.

All four remaining GOP candidates lustily attacked Obama, while Santorum in particular sought to raise his own profile.

Introduced to the audience at the outset, he mentioned his change of fortunes in Iowa, where an evident eight-vote defeat in caucuses on Jan 3 was belated transformed into a 34-vote advantage ? though the Iowa Republican Party did not declare a winner.

Santorum jabbed at both Gingrich and Romney, but seemed to focus more attention on the former. If Gingrich is the party nominee, he said, "you sort of have that worrisome moment that something's going to pop. And we can't afford that in a nominee."

Utah doc facing murder charge gets transferred (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A Utah doctor facing a murder charge for a botched late-term abortion appears to have been extradited to Maryland.

Salt Lake County jail Lt. Pam Lofgreen says Dr. Nicola Irene Riley was released to the custody of another police agency Thursday.

Riley waived extradition to Maryland on Jan. 9 after a Utah judge denied a bail request.

Maryland authorities charged the 46-year-old physician in December with one count each of first-degree and second-degree felony murder, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Charges stem from an August 2010 procedure that left an 18-year-old woman with a ruptured uterus and injured bowel.

Prosecutors say Riley drove the woman to the hospital rather than call 911.

Riley has not yet entered a plea, although her defense attorneys have said nothing illegal occurred.

Bahrain king announces constitutional reforms (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? Bahrain's king announced constitutional amendments on Sunday giving parliament more powers of scrutiny over government, but the opposition said they fell far short of demands for democracy that have driven a year of unrest in the Gulf Arab state.

The speech did not mention clashes between riot police and mainly Shi'ite opposition activists that have taken place on an almost daily basis since martial law was lifted in May after the Sunni-dominated government crushed a pro-democracy uprising.

The island nation, home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, is seen by the United States and Saudi Arabia as a key ally against non-Arab Shi'ite power Iran just across Gulf waters.

The amendments, which increase powers to question and remove ministers and withdraw confidence in the cabinet, emerged from a national dialogue King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa organized last year after the uprising.

The main opposition party Wefaq withdrew from the dialogue, saying it did not go far enough to offer real reform.

The king, in a televised speech said: "Our people have proven their desire for continuing with reforms... We complete the march today with those who have an honest patriotic desire for more progress and reform.

"I must mention here that democracy is not just constitutional and legislative rules, it is a culture and practice and adhering by the law and respecting international human rights principles," he said.

"I beseech all sectors of society to work together so that all their sons adhere to the law..."

The cabinet is headed by the same prime minister from the royal family who was appointed when Bahrain emerged from colonial tutelage in 1971. The elected parliament's powers to legislate are neutralized by an appointed chamber.

Activists were scathing about the speech, which comes after a number of deaths in recent weeks resulting from the tense security situation. They said King Hamad -- widely popular when he came to power promising democratic changes in 1999 -- seemed out of touch with reality.

A 24-year-old Shi'ite man was found dead after he went missing last Wednesday. The Bahrain Centre for Human Rights said his body showed signs of torture, but the Interior Ministry said he suffered from psychological problems and had drowned.

A Shi'ite woman, Badriya Ali, 59, died after setting herself alight on Friday. Her family say she was depressed after her son was forcibly seized from her home and held for five months last year. Police said she was being treated in a psychiatric hospital after several suicide attempts.

A woman from the village of Barbar died from tear gas inhalation on Saturday night, activists said, taking their figure for the total number of deaths since the protests took off last year to around 60.

"Shoes are being thrown at your face (on TV), you lowest of kings in the depths of hell!" wrote a Twitter user called 'Sanabis News', the name referring to a Shi'ite district where police and youths clash daily. A YouTube video showed a poster of the king pelted with shoes in another Shi'ite area.

"This reflects a denial of the demands for better representation for Bahrainis and a fair judiciary," said Wefaq official Matar Matar, noting the reforms could have been effected via legislation rather than constitutional changes.

"It ignores previous promises from the crown prince on a government that represents the people."

Tensions are set to rise ahead of February 14, the anniversary of the uprising last year after Egyptians and Tunisians succeeded in forcing out unpopular leaders. Once a thriving tourism and banking hub, the island's economy has taken a hit as the standoff between the government and opposition drags on.

Analysts say hardliners within the Khalifa family, backed by Saudi Arabia, have the upper hand and reject further reforms.

AP source: House Republicans got discounted loans (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Two veteran House Republicans received discounted mortgage loans from the now-defunct Countrywide Financial Corp. under a VIP program, a congressional official said Friday.

The discounts went to Reps. Howard McKeon and Elton Gallegly of California, said the official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the loans and requested anonymity. Their identities were first reported by The Wall Street Journal.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has been investigating whether members of Congress received VIP discounts. The Associated Press reported previously that four House members had received the discounts. One of the four remains unidentified publicly.

Records show that Rep. Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y, also received discounts. Towns told the AP previously that he was not aware of receiving any discounts. McKeon and Gallegly told the Journal that they also were not aware of receiving discounted loans and did not know their mortgages were processed by the VIP unit.

The Journal said the 1998 loan to McKean, who is chairman of the Armed Services Committee, totaled $315,000. Gallegly's 2005 loan totaled $77,000 in 2005.

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the oversight committee, informed both lawmakers that documents received from Bank of America ? it bought Countrywide ? showed they went through the special unit.

Issa has sent the information to the House Ethics Committee, which determines whether House members violated standards of conduct. A discounted loan could be considered a gift. Gifts are virtually banned under House rules.

None of the lawmakers has been accused by the ethics panel of any wrongdoing, and may never be if they convince investigators they had no knowledge of the discounts.

Countrywide was the nation's largest mortgage company and played a major role in the U.S. financial crisis by issuing subprime loans. The company also had its VIP program, with some of the favored customers known as "Friends of Angelo" ? a reference to chief executive Angelo Mozilo.

Mozilo in 2010 agreed to more than $67 million in penalties in a settlement with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

El Salvador offers pensions, care to ex-rebels (AP)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador ? Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes says an estimated 22,000 former rebel combatants now living in poverty will finally get long-overdue health care, pensions and other benefits.

The approximately $24.5-million program will give $50-per month pensions to survivors over 70 from the leftist Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front.

Funes ran on the ticket of the front, which turned into a political party following 1992 peace accords that ended the 12-year civil war. Funes did not fight.

Army soldiers who fought the rebels have pensions. About 25,000 rebel fighters are still alive and 87 percent live in poverty. Funes spoke Friday at a gathering of rebel veterans days before the Jan. 16 anniversary of the war's end.

Judge upholds reporting by gun store owners (AP)

WASHINGTON ? A federal judge has dismissed a firearms industry association's lawsuit seeking to block the Obama administration from requiring gun store owners in Southwest border states to report when customers buy multiple high-powered rifles.

U.S. District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives properly limited its requirement to purchasers of two or more semi-automatic rifles greater than .22 caliber within five days in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico or Texas

The requirement was imposed after ATF acknowledged during congressional hearings it made mistakes in Operation Fast and Furious, a Phoenix-area investigation designed to catch weapons-trafficking kingpins. Agents lost track of many weapons they were trying to track to smuggling ringleaders, and some guns ended up at crime scenes in Mexico and the U.S.

Walmart's "free" offer could come with a price (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? As tax season begins, a decision by Wal-Mart Stores Inc (WMT.N) to offer some free and discounted tax preparation in conjunction with its check-cashing services at more than 3,000 U.S. stores is less about giving back and more about bringing in, experts cautioned.

"No company does anything altruistically," Morningstar analyst Michael Keara said.

Now that the holiday shopping season is over, the retailer is looking for new revenue sources, he said. The company's latest offer allows consumers to have their tax refunds deposited for "free" onto a Walmart cash card. In addition, the company is working with major tax preparation firms to provide free "assisted" form 1040EZ filings.

It will take a while to see how lucrative the new service will be, given that some people will choose to pay down debt from their previous round of spending with their tax refunds, Keara said. Either way, it's going to put more money into Walmart stores and is another play to reach millions of Americans who don't use traditional banking services.

"It just locks in that they'll spend their rebate checks at Walmart," Keara said. "It's pretty smart."

Walmart already is a big player in the marketplace to cash checks for those who don't use traditional banking services and who often face steep check cashing fees. Walmart charges a flatrate price of $3 or $6 (depending on the size of the check) rather the 3 percent to 5 percent fees at check cashing services. For a $500 check, that means paying $3 at Walmart or $15 to $25 at a check cashing service.

The new program, which kicked off on Monday, come as Walmart tries to reach "unbanked" consumers, who typically don't have credit cards, either. About 85 percent of transactions at Walmart stores are paid with cash.

Some 2,800 Walmart U.S. stores have a Jackson Hewitt (JTX.F) location, and another 250 or so stores feature H&R Block Inc (HRB.N).

Those providers will offer free 1040 EZ filings with tax preparation consultants in Walmart stores, said Daniel Eckert, head of Walmart financial services. Prices for other tax preparation services will be about 7 percent to 10 percent lower than at both companies' other locations, he added.

Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block already offer free basic tax return preparation through their offices and websites. It also is free to file the simplified 1040EZ on your own, or even through one of the online services, such as Intuit's TurboTax.

More than 60 million Americans do not use traditional financial services such as credit cards and checking accounts, Eckert said. Last year, these consumers paid billion of dollars in fees and interest to financial services providers. Within the next few months, they will be looking to cash more than $31 billion in tax refund checks and many could pay up to $90 for such check cashing services, he said.

"It's money that we want to make sure ends up in the right place, which is back in their pocketbooks," Eckert said.

Walmart, whose core customer has a household income of $30,000 to $60,000, has been trying to stand out to those with limited financial means. The world's largest retailer brought back holiday-season layaway on toys and electronics, letting shoppers pay in installments for a modest fee, a move that appears to have been a success.

Tax preparation is just one offering in Walmart's "MoneyCenter." The retailer also offers Walmart credit cards and money cards, money transfers, money orders along with $3 check cashing.

Ed Mierzwinski, consumer program director for U.S. PIRG, cautioned consumers to look at skeptically at Walmart's proposition.

"Consumers who are considering the Walmart offer should understand that Walmart is not your friend," he said.

One area of concern is the company's offer to allow consumers to have their tax refunds deposited for "free" onto a Walmart cash card, which Mierzwinski pointed out comes with a lot of fees. Some of the fees include $3 if $1,000 isn't added to a card in a given month, $2 to withdraw cash from an ATM, $1 to check your balance and $3 to replace a lost or stolen card.

"You put your refund on their card, so you're more likely to spend your refund at their store than save your refund," he said. "And you're more likely to be an impulse shopper." (Editing by Lauren Young and Beth Pinsker Gladstone)

Palmer wolf-dogs find a new home at California center

Chained to posts on a half-acre lot, the 29 wolf dogs languished for years behind stockade fencing at a roadside attraction outside Palmer.

The wolf hybrids were unable to touch one another except when they were bred through chain-link fences. Several had sore backs and legs because they had never been able to move more than a few yards at a time.

The animals were seized by Alaska authorities as evidence in an ongoing criminal investigation and scheduled for destruction before the Lockwood Valley Animal Rescue Center intervened. The center had the wolf dogs spayed and neutered, then transported by plane and truck to its sanctuary in the Los Padres National Forest, about 90 miles north of Los Angeles.

They arrived at the 20-acre sanctuary Dec. 12 and will live the rest of their lives unchained, in sprawling enclosures and networks of wire holding pens.

Striding toward a pen shaded by scrub oaks and pine trees, Lori Lindner, co-founder and president of the nonprofit sanctuary, introduced visitors last week to members of her new packs: a black female with dark honey-colored eyes featured in Sean Penn's 2007 film, "Into the Wild," and a large male that fathered seven of the rescued wolf dogs.

Lindner, 46, recalled with a sigh arriving at the Wolf Country USA attraction north of Anchorage earlier in the month to begin preparing the animals for the long trip to California.

"It was heartbreaking to see so many of these animals on chains," she said. "Wolf dogs are products of human vanity and machismo."

The trouble is that crossing wolves, which have been bred by nature for millions of years to be wild, with dogs, which have been genetically manipulated for thousands of years to serve humans, creates a conflict of innate behaviors. As a result, they are often chained up or given away, turned loose or killed, or they escape and are shot or poisoned.

In a 2 1/2-acre enclosure dubbed "wolf mansion," Lindner's husband, Matthew Simmons, called out to six juvenile wolf dogs that were adjusting to a measure of freedom.

"No more pain," said Simmons, 38. "They're getting along amazingly well, although there have been a few tussles in which one girl pushed another girl around. But overall, they honestly seem to understand that this is a better environment than where they came from."

The Humane Society of the United States has taken a hard stand against wolf dogs as unpredictable, destructive and rarely trainable. At least 16 states ban them, and California and 20 other states have restrictions on ownership. Alaska prohibits ownership of wolves or wolf dogs unless they are spayed or neutered, fitted with microchips and registered with state authorities.

Lindner and Simmons were alerted by sanctuary accreditation officials that Wolf Country USA was under investigation, accused of illegal possession of wolf dogs. The zoo-like attraction boasted "the largest wolf pack in Alaska" and charged $5 to walk along a path close enough to the animals to take snapshots and, in certain cases, pet one.

"We flew to Alaska and met with the assistant attorney general," Simmons said. "He told us that the state had no place to keep them, and if we didn't take them he was going to dispatch state troopers to shoot them and toss them into a freezer until the court battle with Wolf Country USA was resolved."

In a telephone interview, Werner Shuster, owner of Wolf Country USA, denied that the wolf dogs had been mistreated or that he had broken the law.

"We raised them since they were pups, each one had 12 to 15 feet of space and they were the healthiest animals on the planet," said Shuster, 82. "They do better on chains. That way they don't fight, and people can pet them."

Money to take the wolf dogs to the sanctuary came from a $5,000 donation from the Humane Society and a "very, very large donation" from Bob Barker, who hosted the TV game show "The Price is Right" for 35 years, Simmons said. Barker also helped when the Alaska Zoo's elephant, Maggie, was taken to California.

Because of their histories, size, strength and often unstable temperaments, the wolf dogs need lots of care. The nonprofit International Fund for Animal Welfare donated $43,000 to construct nine new enclosures with 10-foot-high fencing.

The sanctuary needs $3,000 a month for maintenance and about $350 a day for raw meat, day-old products bought from local grocery stores at a discount. It is also negotiating the purchase of a nearby 180-acre property that would be devoted to dozens more rescued wolf dogs and wolves. "We need $250,000 for a down payment on the property," Simmons said.

Oil rises above $102 ahead of key US jobs report

Oil prices rose to above $102 a barrel on Friday as investors awaited the latest U.S. employment data for clues about crude demand.

By early afternoon in Europe, benchmark crude for February delivery rose 51 cents to $102.32 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $1.41 to settle at $101.81 in New York on Thursday.

In London, Brent crude was up 39 cents at $113.13 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange.

Traders will be closely watching the Labor Department's jobs report for December, scheduled to be released later Friday. The department on Thursday reported another drop in the number of people filing for unemployment benefits, and ADP, which processes payroll data, said private employers added 325,000 jobs last month.

Crude has jumped from $75 in October amid signs the U.S. economy is slowly improving. The unemployment rate was 8.6 percent in November, and a further drop would signal to investors that as the economy strengthens, so too will demand for crude products such as gasoline and diesel.

"We expect any surprises out of the employment report to lean toward the bullish side," energy consultant Ritterbusch and Associates said in a report. "However, eurozone debt problems are a more critical determinant to oil over the next couple of months."

Traders are also closely watching rising tensions between Iran and Western powers. Iran has threatened to close the key oil passageway Strait of Hormuz as possible retaliation to new U.S. and European economic sanctions. The U.S. has said it will not tolerate such a move.

"As much as $5 to $7 of risk premium is imbedded in the oil market to account for the possibility of a disruption of tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz," Ritterbusch said.

In other Nymex trading, heating oil gained 3.37 cents at $3.0725 per gallon and gasoline futures added 1.67 cents at $2.7532 per gallon. Natural gas futures were up 2.7 cents to $3.007 per 1,000 cubic feet.

DIY Garage Ceiling Storage System [Weekend Projects]

DIY Garage Ceiling Storage SystemIf you need more storage space in your garage you can construct ceiling flanges from 2x4s and plywood that will hold any heavy-duty plastic storage bin.

The Family Handyman site claims this project can be done over a weekend with around $75 worth of lumber and other materials. You'll cut the lumber, assemble the flanges, and mount them to your ceiling joists. Once assembled, slide your storage bins in the flange. If you build 4 flanges long enough to store two 14-gallon totes between each set of flanges as in the photo above you've gained 84 gallons (six totes) worth of storage space.

I don't recommend storing heavy materials this way, but for holiday ornaments, camping gear, and other seldom-used items this method should work well.

Full instructions, materials list, and step-by-step photos can be found at the source link below.

Penn State hires Bill O'Brien as football coach

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Penn State has hired New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien as its head coach, the first change in leadership for the storied football program in nearly a half-century.

The announcement caps a turbulent two-month period that began with the firing of Hall of Famer Joe Paterno on Nov. 9 in the aftermath of child sex abuse charges against retired assistant coach Jerry Sandusky.

Not only is O'Brien replacing Division I's winningest coach, but he must also guide a program shrouded in uncertainty. Besides the criminal investigation into Sandusky, the NCAA has launched its own inquiry.

The 42-year-old O'Brien will be formally announced at a news conference on Saturday in the Nittany Lion Inn ballroom on campus. It begins at 11:30 a.m.

But some fickle, fed-up Penn State fans did not wait for the official introduction to take to Twitter to start debating O'Brien's resume and qualifications. While instrumental in running the Patriots' high-powered offense, O'Brien has never been a head coach.

Now he's taking over for Paterno, who had been on the job 46 seasons. In between, the 85-year-old Paterno won 409 games and was elected to the Hall of Fame.

"I am thrilled to be the head coach of the Penn State football program," O'Brien said in a statement. "As head coach of this special football program, it is my responsibility to ensure that this program represents the highest level of character, respect and integrity in everything we do."

He said that encompassed coaches, players and anyone else involved in the 125-year-old football program.

"There is tremendous pride in Penn State football and (we) will never, ever take that for granted," O'Brien said.

The new head coach also faced skepticism from some alumni and prominent former players. Some supported interim coach Tom Bradley to be elevated permanently; others criticized the search process for not taking into account enough the opinions of those affiliated with the program who backed Bradley, a 33-year veteran of the staff.

Others still, including former quarterback Kerry Collins, asked for lettermen to give O'Brien a chance.

"Whether you agree or disagree with his hiring, we should support him," Collins said in a statement Friday night, according to the Reading Eagle. "Instead of chastising him for not being a Penn Stater, let's show him what it means to be a Penn Stater. ... Let's support him in any way we can."

O'Brien has no apparent previous ties to Penn State and a proud program tarnished by a scandal that also led to the departure of President Graham Spanier.

O'Brien and Paterno do share at least one connection though?both coaches attended Brown University.

"I understand Bill O'Brien has been named head coach and I want to congratulate him on his appointment," Paterno said in a statement to The Associated Press provided by his family. "I don't know Bill, but I respect his coaching record, and I am particularly pleased we share a connection to my alma mater, Brown."

"Despite recent commentary to the contrary, Penn State football has always been about more than winning," Paterno added, citing what he said was the program's commitment to education and community service.

"I am hopeful this tradition will continue."

This was O'Brien's first year coordinating the Patriots' legendary offense, but he has also coached star quarterback Tom Brady since 2009 and spent 2008 coaching receivers.

O'Brien recently was in the spotlight when he and Brady got into a heated argument, shown on national television, after Brady threw an interception in the end zone in the fourth quarter of the Patriots' 34-27 win over the Washington Redskins on Dec. 11.

New England closed the regular season on an eight-game winning streak, and scored 513 points, the most in the AFC. Brady threw for 5,235 yards and 39 touchdowns, with just 12 interceptions.

Brady has described O'Brien as a great coach and friend. Receiver Julian Edelman on Friday in Foxborough, Mass., described O'Brien as charismatic and emotional.

"We have found the man to take Penn State football forward," acting athletic director David Joyner said. "Needless to say, we have been looking for someone with some very special qualities, beginning with a heart that beats to the values and vision of Penn State University and our Penn State football legacy and tradition."

Longevity was also a trademark at Penn State, starting with the head coach himself. He had loyal assistants, most of whom had worked for the Hall of Famer for years?and in a couple cases, decades.

Bradley took over as the interim following Paterno's firing. He was among other candidates who interviewed for the job.

Joyner met with the assistants Friday afternoon. By dusk, several coaches had trickled out one-by-one from the glass-enclosed football building to head home. Each declined comment, though when asked, a couple assistants said they planned to return to work Saturday.

A person familiar with the discussion told the AP Friday evening that the assistant coaches were informed that a new head coach had been hired, and he was not from the current staff, though the replacement was not identified to them.

Another person familiar with the search told the AP most of the current staff could be let go. Each person spoke on condition of anonymity because no one was authorized to comment about the search or related topics.

Former standout linebackers LaVar Arrington and Brandon Short had organized a petition in support of interim coach Bradley's candidacy. Short said the petition only included about 100 names after he was informed by a member of Penn State's search committee it was enough to sway their opinions.

He said he had planned to meet with Joyner on Friday in a meeting scheduled before reports began to surface about O'Brien. He could consider cutting ties with his alma mater now that O'Brien's hire has been confirmed, and he has said some former players?operating independently of the official Football Letterman Club for football alumni?might consider a lawsuit that would prevent the school from using their likenesses or images in the future.

Now an investment banker in New York, Short played seven seasons with the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers. He called Bradley the best candidate for the job, citing Bradley's role in helping to maintain the program's high academic standards and ability to help Penn State through the crisis of the last two months.

"The administration is under the belief that if they hire an NFL coach, or someone flashy, that they will fill seats," Short said in phone interview Thursday. "As an NFL player, I can tell you that there is a big difference between developing young men and recruiting, then the combine and free agency.

"It's two different universes."

D.J. Dozier, a running back on the 1986 title team, said Thursday the search committee should have polled current and former players and high school coaches in the region. He planned to sign the petition if more signatures were taken.

"Give that person and that staff a chance. I believe the current staff has done a good job," Dozier said. "Unless there's politics involved, give them a chance."

Penn State ended up going in a different direction.

O'Brien joined New England in 2007 following 14 seasons on the college level, including stops at Duke, Maryland and Georgia Tech. He played football at Brown?Paterno's alma mater.

The Patriots are third in the NFL overall in scoring (32.1 points per game), and second in total offense (428 yards) and passing (317.8 yards).

Penn State finished a 9-4 campaign with a 30-14 loss in the TicketCity Bowl to Houston on Jan. 2. The Nittany Lions relied on defense much of the year after the offense struggled with a two-quarterback system.

In a statement, President Rodney Erickson commended O'Brien as someone who would maintain the school's commitment to excellence on the field and in the classroom. "We have that leader in Coach O'Brien," Erickson said.

(AP) ? Barely triumphant in Iowa, Mitt Romney campaigned Wednesday seeking an overwhelming victory in New Hampshire's primary ? and found tough questions even with Sen. John McCain, the locals' beloved war hero, at his side.

Romney returned to New Hampshire the morning after his eight-vote victory in Iowa's caucuses, and McCain joined him on stage as part of his endorsement announcement. But the crowd that greeted Romney asked more hostile questions than any he found in Iowa over the past two weeks ? or those in New Hampshire earlier in December.

"I'm Mark from Occupy Boston, and from Occupy New Hampshire," said the first questioner, who wasn't a fan. "You've said that corporations are people."

The second questioner read from a piece of paper as she asked why Romney defended his Massachusetts health law but thought it was bad for the nation. "Why did you want to hold people who could afford health insurance accountable in Massachusetts, but now you're OK with increasing costs for everyone else?" she asked.

And third, a Chinese American woman rose to challenge Romney's economic policies. When he pointed out America was the wealthiest nation on earth, she said: "I love this country . I hate all this degrading thing about China this, China that."

Her comments were drowned out by other shouts from the crowd, until Romney repeated her: "She said she loves this country, and don't put any Asians down. I hope I don't put any Asians down," he said.

Romney took a few more questions and wasn't visibly rattled, instead pushing back and looking to McCain to help him with his answers

But it was a remarkable start to the last week of a primary that Romney hopes to win by overwhelming margins. A second event, in the ornate Peterborough Town House, was more upbeat, with questions about Pakistan and taxes on the self-employed and a query from a boy who wanted to know just why Romney wanted to go to all the trouble of running for president.

Romney and McCain appeared together at both events, McCain's endorsement timed and clearly designed to maximize the war hero's particularly high standing in New Hampshire. The Arizona Republican had been planning for weeks to endorse Romney and appeared to kick off the final week of campaigning ahead of the primary here.

McCain called Romney "an honest, straight-talking person of experience," high praise from the man whose 2000 campaign bus was nicknamed the "Straight Talk Express" after his reputation for speaking his mind.

Still, Romney and McCain had an uneasy rapport standing on stage together. Instead of having McCain introduce Romney to the crowds, as is typical of most of Romney's other prominent endorsers, McCain was the closer, standing ramrod still during Romney's typical stump speeches.

And during questions, McCain, the 2008 nominee, jumped right in. McCain was holding the microphone when a questioner asked, "What do we do about Pakistan?"

As McCain started to speak, so did Romney.

Romney blinked first. "We'll let him start," Romney said with a laugh, deferring to McCain's experience and knowledge of foreign policy issues.

Romney still faces conservative challenges from former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who barely lost in Iowa, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has already started running newspaper ads declaring Romney too moderate.

Iowa's third-place finisher, Rep. Ron Paul, is also poised to play a significant role in the state.

McCain and Romney haven't always been political allies. McCain beat Romney in the 2008 New Hampshire primary, and there is a history of acrimony between the two. During that race, McCain said, "When he ran for office in Massachusetts being a Republican wasn't much of a priority for him."

In 2008, Romney eventually endorsed McCain ? and now in 2012, McCain has returned the favor.

But their differences were still obvious. The 75-year-old McCain, clearly at ease, showed flashes of the charming former fighter jock who ran here in 2000, bantering about boxing and cracking jokes that drew easy laugher from the crowd.

Romney, smiling and upbeat, hit a few of his usual, slightly awkward moments, at one point trying to acknowledge a questioner seated in the balcony as a staffer handed the microphone to someone seated in the main room.

"When I was in school, the back row was where all the cool kids were," Romney said, looking up. "I never quite made it there, but I tried."

Monsanto 1Q profit surges on seed sales (AP)

ST. LOUIS ? Monsanto Co. said Thursday its fiscal first-quarter earnings soared on strength of its seed business. The company also brightened its outlook for the full fiscal year.

Its shares rose more than 5 percent in late morning trading.

Monsanto said its net income rose to $126 million, or 23 cents per share, for the three months ended Nov. 30. That's up from $9 million, or 2 cents per share, a year earlier.

Revenue leaped 33 percent to $2.44 billion from $1.84 billion a year earlier. Monsanto said growth was driven by demand for corn throughout Latin America.

Sales in Monsanto's seeds and genomics segment increased 32 percent to $1.5 billion, reflecting the strength in Latin America and some timing benefits from its Australian cotton business.

Overall, sales of corn seed and traits rose 46 percent, while sales of cotton seeds and traits jumped 73 percent.

"We've seen a very strong start to the year, with real growth in Latin America and early orders in the United States that underscore our sustained momentum carrying into 2012," Chairman, President and CEO Hugh Grant said.

FactSet says analysts expected earnings of 16 cents per share on revenue of $2.05 billion.

For all of fiscal 2012, the St. Louis company expects earnings per share of between $3.39 and $3.44, which is at the high end of its previous expectation of a growth percentage in the "mid-teens." Analysts expect earnings of $3.47 per share.

Its shares rose $4.09, or 5.6 percent, to $76.76 in midday trading. Its 52-week high of $78.71 was set in late October.

Jan 3 - Hillary Clinton for vice president

She clearly wants to be President and if she can get in the fold as Vice President on another 4 years of Obama it would set her up to be the next big DEM candidate in 2016, wouldn't be a shock if this happens, Biden is a none figure compared to her.

Hillary Clinton for vice president
By Suzi Parker
Hillary Clinton for vice president - She the People: - The Washington Post
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. ? ?We need Hillary in the White House in 2016 or on the ticket in 2012,? an elderly man told Bill Clinton at a recent book signing here. The former president smiled, signed a copy of ?Back to Work: Why We Need Smart Government for a Strong Economy,?? and[..]ured the man he?d let his wife know: ?I?ll pass that along to Hillary.?

Arkansas Democrats have been whispering for months that President Barack Obama would be smart to put Secretary of State Hil
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton speaks during a press conference in Yangon, Myanmar. (AP Photo/Saul Loeb, Pool (Saul Loeb - AP) lary Clinton on the ticket as vice-president.

After all, it?s no secret Hillary is tired of logging miles as the 67th Secretary of State. She racked up 237,597 miles ? as of Dec. 8, the latest date for totals ? while visiting 45 countries and logging 506 hours of travel time in 2011. She has already said she doesn?t want a second term as Secretary of State.

When asked about her plans, the former president said, ?She?s tired and she wants to come home? and ?do the kind of work that I?m doing now.? But, he added, ?It?s up to her to come and know what she intends to do.?

So, does that mean anything in particular about the former senator?s future plans? Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor in the Clinton Administration, predicted in ?Business Insider? last week that Obama will pick Hillary as vice president in a switcheroo that makes Biden secretary of state ? ?a position he?s apparently coveted for years,? Reich said. He said his prediction was not, however, based on any insider information.

Past coverage: Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in November that she has no plans to run for president again.

This was manna for those Hillary supporters who have never abandoned hope that the former first lady might still become the nation?s first female president. There?s currently a ?Petition to Draft Hillary Clinton for President in 2012? Facebook page. One website, ?Hillary Unleashed,? is urging New Hampshire voters to write-in Hillary?s name on Jan. 10.

And even as her most adamant supporters long for a never-gonna-happen run against Obama, they?d happily support an Obama-Clinton ticket ? and argue that she?d energize a sagging, depressed Democratic base ? women, environmentalists and unions.

By picking Hillary as vice president, Obama would get Bill Clinton, too. This was not always considered such a plus; in 2008, the former president often lashed out at the media and occasionally made inappropriate comments about Obama. Those days seemed long gone, though, as Clinton discussed a recent visit with Obama about retrofitting buildings to put Americans back to work.

The 42nd president, the party?s number one cheerleader, still pulls in big bucks for Democrats. At the Little Rock book signing, hundreds of his fellow Arkansans stood in line to meet the former president.

?Wish you were still up there,? one fan after another lamented.

Hillary has been a first lady, a New York senator and Secretary of State. Will she soon complete the political resume building? Doubtful. Don?t expect her to vanish just yet either, though; her supporters won?t let her.
