Meet the Pyro Karen Klein Colorado fires supreme court summer solstice Summer Solstice 2012 Waldo Canyon fire
The Boa Courier is available in 10-, 13-, or 15-inch sizes. Our review unit was the 13-inch model, and its exterior accordingly measures 10.8 by 17.1 by 4.7 inches (HWD) and weighs two pounds like the Ju-Ju-Be Be Hip (Messenger Bag)'s timber model. The Boa Courier's nylon exterior rocks a graphite finish that's decidedly more understated than the Magic Eye-like prints that we saw on the Ju-Ju-Be Micra Be Laptop Bag . In addition to its waterproof coating, the Boa Courier's nylon exterior also features a reflective piping along the flap's outer edges to help increase visibility when making moves during the night.
Since it's a messenger bag, the Boa Courier is designed to be slung over your shoulder. Accordingly, its seatbelt nylon shoulder strap runs across your chest in a manner that allows the bag to hang over your back in a 45-degree angle. A removable shoulder pad can be fastened to this strap to increase its overall comfort. There's also a removable "crossbody strap" that supposedly improves stability by running under your armpit to connect the shoulder strap to an extra buckle on the bag's bottom portion. I found this feature unnecessary, though, and ditched it early on. Although the thought of my bag dangling from a weird angle initially freaked me out, two sturdy plastic buckles kept it securely closed. While I'd choose buckles over Velcro any day, it may not be your cup of tea if you like buttons or zippers.
Despite its compact size, the Boa Courier boasts ample interior storage space by virtue of its many compartments. The main compartment houses a dedicated laptop sleeve that closes over your system with a thick Velcro strap. Between its dense plush padding and snug fit, your laptop feels secure. The rest of the main compartment, meanwhile, is made from a soft herringbone nylon material that protects your gadgets from getting scratched. Here, you'll also find a pen holder and a smartphone compartment. An external zippered pocket beneath the bag's flap serves as a storage pouch for miscellany. On the opposite end of the Boa Courier, a rear external sleeve can hold thin materials like magazines and loose papers. This section also sports a key ring that can conveniently be removed via a sliding buckle mechanism. Nearby, you'll also find a single briefcase handle for carrying the Boa Courier by your side. While two handles would have made more sense, the handle nevertheless feels durable enough to transport a heavy load.
The interior of the Boa Courier also houses a metal-framed Terralinq serial tag, which allows Boa Courier owners to register the unique serial number on the Booq website. In the event of losing the bag, the finder can enter said number on the site, and Booq will in turn contact the original owner and assist in its eventual return. It's a nice idea, in theory at least.
I put the Boa Courier to the test by using it as my primary bag for two full weeks, a period that entailed frenetically zipping between crowded trains and some bicycle riding. In both instances, I stashed my usual necessities inside, like my 13-inch MacBook Pro, a bottle of water, an umbrella, a book, and (in one instance), a six-pack. Throughout, the Boa Courier comfortably rested on my back, and its shoulder strap allowed it hew close enough to my body so it didn't jut out and bump into others on crowded trains. Thanks to its compact size, I was able to deftly swing the Boa Courier in front of me and sit in those rare instances that I got a seat. Moreover, the Boa Courier never lost its shape or sagged, an attribute that became apparent when, at one point, the train's doors closed onto the bag and I had yank it out. Much to my surprise, the Boa Courier took this unscripted stress test in stride.
Even while riding a bike, the Boa Courier never felt burdensome. Thanks to the semi-vertical angle that it rested on my back, it never bumped into my body with my every movement?one of my biggest pet peeves with messenger bags. Moreover, all of my wares consistently remained accessible, making interior navigation and organization feel like second nature. I especially liked the key ring since I was able to grab my keys without having to fiddle with any compartments or zipper every time I needed to enter or leave my apartment.
So the question remains: After two weeks of using the Booq Boa Courier, am I a messenger bag convert? The answer is a resounding "yes." The Boa Courier proved itself to be a highly functional and comfortable way to carry my gear around without compromising my style. For students, commuters, and wavering backpackers looking for a cool way to tote their gear around, it's definitely worth checking out.

Typically the errors are good for people to know.. you know - see what is what directly from the horse's mouth versus an interpretation.

TORONTO (AP) ? Research In Motion co-founder Mike Lazaridis says he has no plans to sell his significant interest in the BlackBerry maker now that he's retiring as vice chairman and director. He also reveals that the board asked him last year to reconsider stepping down as chief executive.
Lazaridis said in an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday that he decided to stay on to help new CEO Thorsten Heins with the critically important new BlackBerry launch. He says he's leaving now that that's been done.
Lazaridis helped turn the email smartphone into a ubiquitous device that many could not live without, but he and Jim Balsillie stepped down as co-CEOs in January 2012 after several quarters of disappointing results. He says the board wanted both him and Jim to stay.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama attempted on Thursday to inject fresh momentum into efforts to pass gun-control legislation, pleading with U.S. lawmakers not to forget those shot to death in Newtown, Connecticut three months ago.
Amid signs that he may have to accept a scaled-down version of gun legislation, Obama sounded a note of frustration in calling upon Americans to demand action from the U.S. Congress in the weeks ahead.
He said the legislation's opponents, the powerful U.S. gun lobby led by the National Rifle Association, are "doing everything they can" to derail the effort barely 100 days after the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, in which a gunman killed 20 children, six staff members and then himself.
"The entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time would be different. Shame on us if we've forgotten. I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten," said Obama, appearing at the White House with mothers of children who had been shot to death.
The gunman in Newtown, Adam Lanza, fired 154 rounds in less than 5 minutes, selecting high capacity magazines from a home arsenal stocked with swords, knives and a cache of guns, officials said Thursday.
Despite events like this, a grassroots organizing effort by Obama supporters and a high-profile advertising campaign funded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to keep up the pressure, gun legislation has been stalled on Capitol Hill in recent weeks.
The best chance of success for gun-control advocates is that Congress will approve universal background checks for gun purchasers and tougher penalties for gun trafficking.
Less likely to pass are bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, two of the main proposals to emerge from Vice President Joe Biden's gun violence task force, formed by Obama after the Newtown shootings.
'JUST THE BEGINNING'
Biden seemed to acknowledged the challenge when he said on a conference call on Wednesday organized by Mayors Against Illegal Guns that the administration will keep pressing for action regardless of what Congress does in the immediate future.
"Let me say this as clearly as I can: This is just the beginning," Biden said.
Obama had hoped at the outset of his second term to use his re-election mandate to make rapid progress on three major issues: gun violence, deficit-reduction and immigration reform.
All are moving slowly, however.
Immigration may offer the best prospect for action as Republicans seek to attract more Hispanic Americans who voted overwhelming for Obama and his Democrats in the 2012 elections.
Republicans insist that any pathway to citizenship for 11 million illegal immigrants be preceded by certification that U.S. borders are secure.
The biggest stumbling block to an immigration bill concerns creation of a guest-worker program to allow immigrants to cross the U.S.-Mexican border legally for temporary jobs.
U.S. labor unions, which worry such a program would lead to a loss of jobs for Americans, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have yet to arrive at a formula acceptable to both. Their agreement is considered crucial to bringing Congress along.
Obama has said he is encouraged by the progress, and he believes the dispute over the guest-worker program can be resolved. After first declaring the U.S.-Mexican border sufficiently secure, Obama now says it can be improved, a position that may permit him to make a deal with Republicans.
"I'm actually optimistic about this, in part because I think both Republicans as well as Democrats are now recognizing that it's the right thing to do," Obama told Univision, a Spanish-language network, in an interview on Wednesday.
Obama's attempt to negotiate a "grand bargain" aimed at reducing the U.S. budget deficit is facing old-fashioned political gridlock and could collapse into a partisan sinkhole.
In a fresh round of schmoozing to discuss this and other legislative items, Obama will dine with a dozen Republican senators on April 10, the second such meeting he will have held in his attempts to engage his political opponents.
TAXING THE RICH
Lawmakers are still bruised from a fight over $85 billion in automatic spending cuts that went into effect a month ago despite Obama's attempt to head them off.
Obama still wants what Republicans refused to give him in that budget fight, an increase in taxes on the wealthy by eliminating some deductions and loopholes. Republicans instead want to cut spending.
The White House struck a pessimistic note this week on the prospects for success given the Republican leadership's refusal to agree to raise more tax revenues.
"As long as Republicans are saying we're not going to ask the wealthiest and well-connected to pay a single dime to reduce our deficit, then it is hard to imagine that we're going to reach a compromise," White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said Wednesday.
The difficulties in gaining passage of major legislation reflects the continued grip partisan politics holds on Washington, with the White House and Senate run by Democrats and the House of Representatives controlled by Republicans. This makes the 2014 midterm congressional elections of increasing importance.
"Look, it's what we all thought when Obama was re-elected," said Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics. "There is just not going to be a lot of new legislation in Obama's second term, unless he wins the House in 2014, and even then it looks very, very tough."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Johan Santana may have thrown his final pitch for the New York Mets and perhaps even the last of his big league career.
The Mets said Thursday the two-time Cy Young Award winner probably has re-torn the anterior capsule in his left shoulder and likely will need a second operation that would sideline him for the entire season. Santana missed 2011 following his first shoulder surgery.
"I am not a doctor, nor am I a medical historian, but these injuries are very difficult to recover from after one surgery, and I'm not sure what the history is of recovery from a second more or less identical surgery," general manager Sandy Alderson said on a conference call.
New York owes the 34-year-old left-hander $31 million more as part of the $137.5 million, six-year deal he signed before the 2008 season, and Alderson said the remainder of the contract is not covered by insurance.
Santana had surgery on Sept. 14, 2010, and did not make it back to the major leagues until last April 5. He went 6-9 with a 4.85 ERA in 21 starts last year and threw the first no-hitter in team history on June 1 against St. Louis.
Santana threw a career-high 134 pitches that night in his second consecutive shutout, but was 3-7 with an 8.27 ERA after that, including 0-5 with a 15.63 ERA after throwing eight scoreless innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 30.
He went on the disabled list for three weeks because of a sprained ankle and didn't pitch after Aug. 17 because of lower back inflammation.
Santana hasn't pitched in any exhibition games during spring training because of arm weakness, and he threw his last bullpen session in early March without the team's permission.
"We don't know when it happened, how it happened," Alderson said. "But what we do know is that at some point symptoms appeared and they worsened rather than improved."
Peter Greenberg, the pitcher's agent, said Santana didn't have any comment yet.
Alderson said an MRI in New York on Wednesday with Dr. David Altchek showed the probable re-tear, and that noted orthopedists Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lewis Yocum concurred with the diagnosis on Thursday after reviewing the MRI.
"Johan will remain in New York over the Easter weekend to decide on next steps," Alderson said. "A second surgery is a strong possibility. If this diagnosis proves to be correct, I think in all likelihood Johan will be lost to the Mets for the season."
Santana is 45-34 with a 3.18 ERA for the Mets after going 93-44 with a 3.22 ERA in eight years with the Minnesota Twins. He won the AL Cy Young Award in 2004 and 2006.
He is owed $25.5 million this year in the final guaranteed season of his $137.5 million, six-year contract, and $5.5 million of this year's salary is deferred at 1.25 percent compounded interest until June 30, 2020. The Mets hold a $25 million option for 2014 with a $5.5 million buyout, and the buyout also is deferred.
Alderson said the Mets may have insured earlier years of the contract and that it is not unusual to choose not to insure the final season.
Coming off four consecutive losing seasons and four straight years of declining attendance, the Mets traded reigning NL Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey to Toronto for a package of prospects during the offseason. New York's remaining rotation includes left-hander Jonathon Niese and righties Matt Harvey, Dillon Gee, Jeremy Hefner and Shaun Marcum, who has been sidelined since March 16 because of a shoulder impingement and neck discomfort.
Niese will start the season opener Monday against San Diego, an assignment that almost surely would have gone to Santana if healthy. Hefner will take Santana's place in the rotation, and Marcum is scheduled to start the sixth game of the season against Miami.
Alderson claimed Santana's injury will not lead the Mets to rush 22-year-old right-hander Zack Wheeler, their top pitching prospect, to the majors.
"We will bring him up when he is ready," Alderson said. "No immediate need will impact that."
In addition to the money owed Santana, the Mets reached a settlement during the offseason with free-agent bust Jason Bay and released the pricey outfielder after three unproductive seasons. Bay and Santana account for roughly $42 million of New York's 2013 payroll, which will be about $90 million on opening day.

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets fell Tuesday as relief turned to worry over a bailout that prevents Cyprus from going bankrupt.
The bailout, signed and sealed Monday by European finance ministers, initially alleviated fears of a possible collapse of Cyprus' banking system. But soon worries arose over the terms of the deal: it requires a banking overhaul and big losses for bondholders and depositors.
"Overall, we think that the market will eventually regard the handling of this crisis as a set-back to euro zone credibility," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary.
Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.4 percent to 12,494.34. Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.3 percent to 22,176.69. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 dropped 0.7 percent to 4,953.10. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.4 percent to 1,985.01.
Concern intensified late Monday after a key official indicated that the Cyprus rescue may have to be repeated in other nations with struggling banks. Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem said that bondholders and depositors should be prepared to take losses if the banks they put their money in run into trouble.
European markets in financially weaker states, such as Italy and Spain, fell sharply. Italy's FTSE-MIB closed 2.5 percent down while Spain shed 2.3 percent. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 0.4 percent to 14,447.75. The S&P 500 closed down 0.3 percent at 1,551.69. The Nasdaq composite index dropped 0.3 percent to 3,235.30.
In return for a 10 billion euros ($13 billion) bailout from international lenders, Cyprus agreed to drastically shrink its banking sector, cut its budget, implement economic reforms and privatize state assets.
Cyprus must contribute 5.8 billion euros to the deal. To do so, the country's second-largest bank, Laiki, will be restructured and bondholders and depositors with more than 100,000 euros will have to take significant losses.
Depositors in the biggest bank, the Bank of Cyprus, with over 100,000 euros will also bear a cost but those with savings up to 100,000 euros will covered by the EU's deposit insurance guarantee.
Some analysts said, however, the deal was a short-term solution that quickly relieved a small-sized crisis that could have spiraled rapidly downward.
"Cyprus is less than 1 percent of the European Union's GDP," said Dickie Wong of Kingston Securities in Hong Kong. "But those savers and bondholders are in deep trouble."
Among individual stocks, Tomy Co. tumbled 5.1 percent after the Japanese toy maker revised down its earnings projection for the current business year ending March, Kyodo News Agency said.
Later Tuesday, the U.S. Commerce Department reports on business orders for durable goods in February. Consensus forecast is that orders rose 3.7 percent, after a 4.9 percent drop in January.
In energy markets, benchmark oil for May delivery fell was down 1 cent to $94.80 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose $1.10 to finish at $94.81 a barrel on the Nymex on Monday.
In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2863 from $1.2851 late Monday in New York. The dollar fell to 94.12 yen from 94.16 yen.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's not the kind of performance that will win her another Academy Award, but Tilda Swinton certainly has them buzzing at the Museum of Modern Art.
But keep it down, please. She's trying to sleep.
The "Moonrise Kingdom star has been engaging in a different kind of performance art. She's presenting a one-person piece called "The Maybe," in which she lies sleeping in a glass box for the day. The first performance was over the weekend, and the museum won't say if there's a schedule for when exactly it will come back for six other performances.
On Monday, the display drew a line of spectators that wound through a whole second-floor gallery into a museum hallway.
Erwin Aschenbrenner, a bemused German tourist, said it "just what you'd expect to see at MoMA."
The actress "is so pale and not moving in there that she looks like she's dead," said Robbie von Kampen, 20, a philosophy major at Bard College, north of New York City.
But after about seven hours a day of the shuteye pose on a white mattress in the glass box ? with only a carafe of water and a glass to get her through ? Swinton can stretch and walk off into the Manhattan night. But only when spectators leave.
So what's the point?
"This makes me think about myself, looking at her," said Quinn Moreland, 20, also a Bard student, majoring in art history.
"You don't usually get to stare at somebody like this; it makes me self-conscious," she explained.
Added von Kampen, "Yeah, it's socially unacceptable ? it's kinda creepy."
No one, not even museum curators, could say whether the thin, mostly immobile Swinton is actually getting some sleep while people stare at her.
At least Swinton was comfortable. She wore a pair of grubby sneakers, dark sporty slacks and a checkered shirt. Her glasses lay on the mattress.
But no snacks were in sight. And none could be offered in the closed chamber.
Swinton also starred in a glass box in 1995 at London's Serpentine Gallery ? seven days, eight hours a day ? in an exhibition seen by 22,000 people.
The next year, she repeated the spectacle at the Museo Barracco in Rome.

Under the simplest assumptions, the measured mass of the Higgs could mean the universe is unstable and destined to fall apart. But don?t worry?it won?t happen for billions of eons
By Saswato R. Das

Physicists recently confirmed that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, the particle physics laboratory in Geneva, had indeed found a Higgs boson last July, marking a culmination of one of the longest and most expensive searches in science. The finding also means that our universe could be doomed to fall apart. "If you use all the physics that we know now and you do what you think is a straightforward calculation, it is bad news," says Joseph Lykken, a theorist who works at the Fermilab National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois. "It may be that the universe we live in is inherently unstable."
The Higgs boson helps explain why particles have the mass they do. The Higgs particle that the LHC has found possesses a mass of approximately 126 giga-electron volts (GeV)?roughly the combined mass of 126 protons (hydrogen nuclei). (One GeV equals a billion electron volts.)
Based on the data analysis so far, the discovered particle is consistent with the Standard Model of particle physics, the highly successful theory that describes the subatomic world, although other models cannot be ruled out. "It is looking very much like the Standard Model Higgs boson?although there may be a very massive Higgs particle that also exists, and which our experiment is not sensitive enough to detect," says Joseph Incandela, the spokesman for the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment at the LHC, one of the two experiments that detected the current Higgs particle,
And that very nature of being a Standard Model Higgs may be the reason our universe is ultimately unstable. It has to do with the so-called vacuum stability in the Standard Model.
According to the description currently favored by physicists, a vacuum is not completely devoid of matter but instead teems with particles and antiparticles that pop into existence and then run into one another and annihilate themselves, all in very short times. The inherent uncertainty embodied in quantum mechanics permits these spontaneous fluctuations?as long as the particles don't live for more than a fleeting instant, the process violates no laws of physics.
The Standard Model also says, as Lykken puts it, that "for the vacuum of empty space to be stable, we should be living at a minimum of potential energy." In other words, most things end up resting in a place of lowest energy. A ball rolls downhill and settles in a low point; getting it to move away from this point requires a kick of energy. In the case of the universe it would be like living at the bottom of a valley bordered by hills: the value of the Higgs potential would be lowest point of the valley.
Our universe might end if our valley really isn't the lowest one around. Physicist Benjamin Allanach of the University of Cambridge explains: "The shape of the Higgs potential is determined precisely by the Higgs mass." The observed 126 GeV mass seems to imply the universe does not exist in the lowest possible energy state but is in fact positioned in a slightly unusual place. "It turns out that for a Higgs boson of?126 GeV, we might be in the gray area where the universe is at a local minimum that is not the global minimum," says physicist Matthew Strassler of Rutgers University.
It is sort of like being in a valley whose floor is higher than that of an adjoining valley. If you didn't know that a deep valley was on the other side of the hill, you would think you were at the lowest level you could be. If you somehow managed to get to the other side, however, you could fall much lower.
This situation would normally not pose a problem, as you couldn't travel between valleys?except in quantum mechanics, which allows particles to tunnel through hills unpredictably. As a result, "in the future our universe could spontaneously and randomly tunnel through to the deeper one, with potentially catastrophic consequences," Allanach says.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court is raising the prospect that it will find a way out of the case over California's ban on same-sex marriage without issuing a substantial ruling on whether gays have a right to marry.
Several justices, including some liberals who seem open to gay marriage, raised doubts Tuesday that the case is properly before them. Justice Anthony Kennedy, the potentially decisive vote on a closely divided court, suggested that the court could dismiss the case with no ruling at all.

The Cyclone in Coney Island (Holly Bailey/Yahoo News)BROOKLYN, N.Y.?Erik Knapp was just 7 when he took his first turn on the Cyclone, Coney Island?s famed wooden roller coaster. His mother had insisted that he was too young to ride the old rickety coaster, but his grandfather took him anyway, and to hear Knapp tell it, it was love at first ride.
In the years since, Knapp, who is now 47, estimates he?s ridden the coaster ?at least 2,000 times? and says he?ll ride it until the day he dies. As proof, he points to a gigantic tattoo of the Cyclone he had inked on his right bicep many years ago. It?s a permanent depiction of the coaster?s iconic red Cyclone sign and a train of passengers falling on the ride?s first major drop. Seated in the front seat alone is a skeleton.
?That?s me,? Knapp says, grinning. ?This ride is such a part of my life. I have never lost the thrill of it, and I don?t think I ever will.?
But in October, Knapp worried he might lose his beloved ride forever in the fierce winds and flooding of Superstorm Sandy. A massive nine-foot storm surge wiped out many businesses along Surf Avenue, Coney Island?s main strip, and flooded the 86-year-old coaster. But unlike the Jet Star, the coaster in Seaside Heights, N.J., which collapsed into the sea and became an iconic image of Sandy?s devastation, the Cyclone stayed put. And on Sunday, it reopened?along with the Wonder Wheel Ferris wheel and the rest of the amusement park that city officials once feared might not be able to recover in time for this summer.
?Coney Island is open!? Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz declared as he and Sen. Chuck Schumer christened the Cyclone?s reopening by smashing a wine bottle full of egg cream on the ride?s first car.
But all around Coney Island, there are still signs of Sandy?s wrath.
Down the block, the original location of Nathan?s Famous hot dogs remains closed. Its customers have been rerouted to another location on the boardwalk as it tries to reopen later this spring. Coney Island USA, home to vintage games and a freak show, is still closed after flooding caused more than $400,000 in damage to its historic building. And the nearby New York Aquarium also remains closed after heavy damage. Staff there say they hope to reopen by May.
On Sunday, across the street from the Cyclone, about a dozen local residents quietly protested the hype surrounding the amusement park?s reopening. Waving signs that read ?People Live Here? and ?Coney Island is Not Back,? they accused city officials of focusing more on getting the rides open than helping to rebuild the rest of the neighborhood.
?In a lot of buildings, we still don?t have heat. We don?t have a library. We don?t have a police station. We don?t have a post office,? said Dana Monroe of the People?s Coalition of Coney Island, which organized the protest. ?Where are the grand openings for things that actually help the people who live here??
Jeri Gventer, who works with seniors who live on the west end of Coney Island, complained that many of the senior centers in the neighborhood remained without needed repairs. In one building, the elevator has been out of service since Sandy?a big deal because many elderly residents can?t climb stairs very well, if at all.
?This neighborhood is very poor,? Gventer said. ?We can?t do these things without help. And we just feel ignored.?
Across the street, Markowitz said he sympathized with their plight?and blamed delays in receiving state and federal aid as the reason for the slow recovery in the neighborhood. He pointed out that the Cyclone and the rest of the amusement park had opened so quickly in part because the owners of the facility had used their own money to make repairs instead of waiting for public help.
But Markowitz insisted the amusement park would help Coney Island?s recovery because many of its employees live in the neighborhood, and it would likely spur additional redevelopment. But, he added, that doesn?t mean the job in Coney Island is done.
Motioning to the protesters, Markowitz said, "It's right for them to be here, so they put right in front of those that have that responsibility, which is Sen. Schumer, the Assembly, the Senate, Congress, City Council, borough president, all of us, to make sure that we stay focused on resolving their needs.?
But for Knapp, the Cyclone?s return was more than just the reopening of his favorite thrill ride. In October, his home in nearby Gerritsen Beach suffered severe flooding in Sandy, and he said he's spent the past five months slowly trying to rebuild and recover from the storm.
?The Cyclone coming back is not just an important symbol of recovery for the neighborhood, it?s important to me. It gives me a sense of normalcy,? Knapp said.
So on Saturday night?as he has for the past eight years?Knapp got in line outside the Cyclone at just after 8 p.m. so that he could be the first to ride the coaster on its reopening day. He camped outside with a group of friends.
Just after noon on Sunday, he bounded up the roller coaster's entrance ramp and jumped into the train?s first car, where he proudly showed a group of reporters his Cyclone tattoo and the word ?CYCLONE? shaved into his hair. He was so excited he could barely sit still.
?Last night was one of the coldest nights I?ve ever spent out here, but it was worth it,? Knapp said. ?I love the Cyclone. I love Coney Island. It feels good to be back.?

A female great tits' (Parus major) appearance is shown to signal healthy attributes in offspring in a paper in BioMed Central's open access journal Frontiers in Zoology. The black stripe across her breast and white patches on her cheeks correlate to a chick's weight at two weeks and immune strength respectively ? though the former seems to signal a genetic benefit and the latter can affect an 'adopted' chick's health, suggesting nurture is involved.
Taking two mothers with different patterning, and swapping their chicks, researchers from Palacky University in the Czech Republic were able to investigate the growth and health of the infants and the 'ornamentation' of their mothers. They compared the offspring's weight, size and immune strength and found a correlation between the chick's weight at two weeks and the size of black breast stripe on the genetic mother.
The immaculateness of both genetic and foster mother's white cheek patch was related to the strength of chick's immune response suggesting that this was due to both nurture and genetics. In contrast the body size of a chick was related only to the body size of its genetic mother and not to ornamentation at all.
In these socially monogamous birds both the males and females are brightly coloured, however neither the cheek patch nor the stripe in males affected the health of the babies.
Talking about how the ornaments can have evolved to signal reproductive fitness, Vladim?r Reme? and Beata Matysiokov? who performed this study explained, "Bigger healthier babies are important to the reproductive success of individuals, because they are more likely to survive to adulthood - so it is useful for birds to be able to work out which potential mates will produce the best babies. Maintaining bright colouration uses up resources which could otherwise be invested in reproduction or self-maintenance - consequently the evolution and maintenance of ornamentation in female great tits is probably due to direct selection by males."
