Badminton History and Training | Study Sport and Recreation ...

Badminton, in its embryonic stages, was inaugurated in China more than 2,500 years ago. Then a simple children?s game, players generally did not keep score. The basic goal of the game was to keep a shuttle airborne using only the players? feet. Eventually, feet were replaced with a racket.

Though the popularity of this game spread throughout Asia and Europe over the hundreds of years following its creation, it was actually perfected in India. During the late 19th century, the net became a supplemental feature and the game was renamed Poona. Addition of the rackets and nets made the game more interesting and challenging for older players.

Badminton received its new official name in England during the early 1870?s. The then-current Duke of Beaufort made Poona a featured party game at his estate, which was called Badminton. After eventually becoming more competitive in nature, rules and regulations were added to the game.

A player, or team of players, scores a point by preventing opposing players from returning a serve. Customarily, badminton is played in a 21 point game format, meaning the first team to score 21 points wins the game. Matches are won by being victorious in 2 out of 3 games.

This game, which officially became an Olympic sport in 1992, is revered among those of all ages and varying levels of skill. A game of badminton can be as informal or as competitive as the players want it to be; however, the game demands incredible speed and dexterity from its players at a professional level.

Over the years, badminton has gained an ever-growing world wide fan base. Numerous websites and chat forums devoted to the sport are available to players and fans alike. Both children and adults interested in learning to play or improving upon their current skills can find a badminton video online.

For novices, these videos offer step by step instructions on how to play a game, how to serve the shuttle, how to keep score while playing and many other aspects. Videos are also available for more advanced players, offering coaching and tips on improving their form and technique.

NASA surprised to spot ice on Mercury

NASA's Messenger probe enabled researchers to find unexpected materials frozen in Mercury's north pole. Scientists think the materials arrived via comets or asteroids that hit millions of years ago.?

Earth-based telescopes have been compiling evidence for ice on Mercury for 20 years, but the finding of organics was a surprise, say researchers with?NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft, the first probe to orbit Mercury.

Both ice and organic materials, which are similar to tar or coal, were believed to have been delivered millions of years ago by comets and asteroids crashing into the planet.

"It's not something we expected to see, but then of course you realize it kind of makes sense because we see this in other places," such as icy bodies in the outer solar system and in the nuclei of comets, planetary scientist David Paige, with the?University of California, Los Angeles, told Reuters.

Unlike?NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, which will be sampling rocks and soils to look for organic materials directly, the MESSENGER probe bounces?laser?beams, counts particles, measures gamma rays and collects other data remotely from orbit.

The discoveries of ice and organics, painstakingly pieced together for more than a year, are based on computer models, laboratory experiments and deduction, not direct analysis.

"The explanation that seems to fit all the data is that it's organic material," said lead MESSENGER scientist?Sean Solomon, with?Columbia University in New York.

Added Paige, "It's not just a crazy hypothesis. No one has got anything else that seems to fit all the observations better."

Scientists believe the organic material, which is about twice as dark as most of Mercury's surface, was mixed in with comet- or asteroid-delivered ice eons ago.

The ice vaporized, then re-solidified where it was colder, leaving dark deposits on the surface. Radar imagery shows the dark patches subside at the coldest parts of the crater, where ice can exist on the surface.

The areas where the dark patches are seen are not cold enough for surface ice without the overlying layer of what is believed to be organics.

So remote was the idea of organics on Mercury that MESSENGER got a relatively easy pass by?NASA's planetary protection protocols that were established to minimize the chance of contaminating any indigenous life-potential material with hitchhiking microbes from Earth.

Scientists don't believe Mercury is or was suitable for ancient life, but the discovery of organics on an inner planet of the solar system may shed light on how life got started on Earth and how life may evolve on planets beyond the solar system.

"Finding a place in the inner solar system where some of these same ingredients that may have led to life on Earth are preserved for us is really exciting," Paige said.

MESSENGER, which stands for Mercury Surface, Space Environment, Geochemistry and Ranging, is due to complete its two-year mission at Mercury in March.

Scientists are seeking?NASA funding to continue operations for at least part of a third year. The probe will remain in Mercury's orbit until the planet's gravity eventually causes it to crash onto the surface.

Whether the discovery of organics now prompts?NASA to select a crash zone rather than leave it up to chance remains to be seen. Microbes that may have hitched a ride on MESSENGER likely have been killed off by the harsh?radiation?environment at Mercury.

The research is published in this week's edition of the journal Science.

Article Marketing will Get the Best Link Popularity for an Online ...

As an online business owner your success depends on the amount of targeted traffic that you manage to generate to your website. Link popularity is a term used to measure the number and quality of links to your website that happens when other websites link to yours. Focusing on building links to your website is where you need to concentrate your efforts.

There are a number of different methods that you can use to begin building back links to your website, but the majority of them take time and a certain amount of effort, and some of them can also be a pretty tedious and boring task to undertake. As long as search engines continue to rank your website by measuring the link popularity you will have to keep working on link building practices. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing that you can do once and forget about it.

The good thing about building link popularity to your online business website is that it need not be difficult, as you can vary the tasks involved to make it more interesting to do. Here are some of the ways that you can get links to your site, keeping in mind that one way back links are superior to any other kind.

Commenting on other peoples? blogs or in forums is a good way to build links as you can usually add a link to your website within your signature. You can submit your website to the various search engines or you can do article marketing, which is in my opinion is one of the best and least boring ways of building link popularity to a website.

Admittedly it does take more time to write and submit articles to article directories than it takes to submit your website or comment in forums but the rewards can be so much greater when it is done correctly.

The secret to writing and submitting articles to get the links to your online business website is to do the job consistently. This can often be difficult for many internet marketers, but there is a solution and that is to outsource the writing of your articles to someone else. There are thousands of freelance article writers online and many of them can be found on websites such as Elance.com, but if you know your subject and your audience well then it is usually quicker and better to write your own articles.

If you decide that you would rather have someone else ghost write your articles then make sure that you supply them with the keywords you want them to focus on. In the beginning it is best to use keyword phrases which are less competitive as this will give you the opportunity of getting your website ranked more quickly. You can find good keywords to use by researching them using a tool like Google Adwords which is free to use. The more focused and relevant your keywords are the better the one way back links to your website will be.

You can develop your own article marketing strategy, but one way to do it is to write say five articles in one day, in other words make a day that you do nothing but write articles, and then trickle the submission to the various directories. If you are short of time there are some excellent article submission sites that will submit your articles for you and they will submit to hundreds of article directories. Some of them even have a service where they will trickle you articles so that they are spread out over a period of time to the different directories, and they also have the software for you to basically spin the article so that the same article appears differently in the various directories.

It is well worth investing in an article submitting service as they can do the job much more efficiently than you can yourself and it will save you many hours of boring labor. Another way to build link popularity to your online business website is by bookmarking your articles which will increase traffic to your site and improve the number of sales that you make.

Hill's clutch shot pushes Pacers past Lakers 79-77

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? George Hill's high-arching shot over Dwight Howard went in with 0.1 seconds left, and the Indiana Pacers withstood Kobe Bryant's 40-point performance and the Lakers' last-minute rally for a 79-77 victory over Los Angeles on Tuesday night.

Hill scored 19 points and hit that enormous clutch shot for the Pacers, who won their third straight road game over the Lakers after losing 11 consecutive regular-season games since Staples Center opened in 1999.

The Pacers' sturdy defense stifled the Lakers' up-tempo offense for most of the night, turning the game into an ugly grind before the thrilling finish.

Bryant hit a tying 3-pointer with 24.5 seconds left and produced the 114th 40-point game of his career despite playing with an apparent case of the flu for the Lakers, who dropped to 2-3 under new coach Mike D'Antoni.

David West scored 16 points and Paul George had 12 in the opener of Indiana's four-game road trip.

The Lakers flirted with the lowest-scoring game and worst shooting percentage in franchise history before scoring eight straight points in the waning minutes, tying it at 74 on Howard's dunk with 1:56 to play. After West made one free throw, Howard and Metta World Peace combined to miss four straight free throws, dropping Los Angeles' performance at the line to 23 for 43.

After Hill made a running shot, Bryant hit a 3-pointer in front of the Lakers' bench to tie it.

The Pacers wound down the clock for Hill, who beat Pau Gasol off the dribble and arched his shot over the leaping Howard, who blocked four shots and scored 17 points despite 3-of-12 shooting at the free throw line.

Before outscoring the rest of his team combined, Bryant missed the Lakers' morning shootaround when he fell ill. He spent the day in bed, drinking fluids and listening to Bob Marley, before giving another high-scoring performance, albeit with 10 turnovers and 12-for-28 shooting.

The Lakers returned from a three-game trip for a three-game homestand, their final multigame stretch at home before Christmas. After playing six games in a nine-day stretch earlier this month, the Lakers are clearly running near empty ? and they had little to give in the first half against Indiana.

The Pacers jumped to an early lead and hung on to it despite falling into a 1-for-23 shooting slump in the first half, playing more than 12 minutes with just one field goal. The Lakers couldn't take advantage, missing 14 of their 18 shots in the second quarter and repeatedly failing to move the ball at D'Antoni's preferred pace.

Bryant made five of his first six shots, emulating his many strong performances with the flu, but fell into a 1-for-10 slump before getting rolling again late in the third quarter while Los Angeles made a 13-2 run. Bryant had nine turnovers in the first three quarters, but also had 29 points ? more than his teammates' combined 28.

NOTES: The Pacers stay in California to face Sacramento and Golden State before stopping in Chicago on the way home from their trip. ... The Lakers handed out bobblehead dolls in the likeness of the late Chick Hearn, their beloved broadcaster who would have turned 96 on Tuesday. ... Ashton Kutcher, David Beckham, Landon Donovan, Kaley Cuoco, Gene Simmons, Shannon Tweed and Tenacious D band members Jack Black and Kyle Gass watched from courtside.

Muscle Shaking: Is Your Workout Better If Your Body ... - Fitness

Welcome to Ask Healthy Living ? in which you submit your most burning health questions and we do our best to ask the experts and get back to you. Have a question? Get in touch here and you could appear on Healthy Living!

I recently did a workout class where the intensity level was (admittedly) beyond what I probably should have been doing. There was also not much of a warm up at the beginning. During some of the moves, my ab muscles and thigh muscles wobbled uncontrollably. A friend told me his physical therapist says when your body shakes like that during a workout, it?s good because it means those parts of your body are weak. But after researching it a bit myself, it sounds more like wobbling is a sign that you?re overdoing it. What?s the final verdict ? is ?wobbling? during a workout good or bad?

? Amanda

Many exercise programs advertise a certain kind of muscle quaking that they hold up as evidence that their workout is effective. But is the ?wobbling? Amanda refers to actually a sign that your body is getting stronger?

The top kinesiologists and trainers we spoke with agreed that muscle quaking is a physiological response to muscle fatigue, but it isn?t a sign that the muscle is in the midst of development. While it isn?t dangerous, it could lead to injury ? and while working yourself to the point of exhaustion will help improve your fitness, working through that exhaustion will not.

?Twitching is not associated with improvement in terms of strength,? confirms Joseph P. Garry, MD, the director of sports medicine and an associate professor at the University of Minnesota.

Muscle fatigue can result from one of several factors: dehydration, burn-out or a too-tough workout. ?First of all, you could be dehydrated. Dehydration affects all of your body systems, and you will fatigue faster when you are dehydrated,? says Keaira Lashae, trainer for DailyBurn.com and a former dancer. ?Second, maybe your muscle hasn?t has time to adequately recover from your last workout. This especially happens to people who work out many days in a row. Finally, your muscle may be close to failure. This isn?t a bad thing! It just means that your muscle has been working out enough, and now it needs to rest.?

The last option seemed the most likely to kinesiologist Allan Goldfarb, who sees one potential danger: injury from the lack of control.

?If you are not controlling your activation of your muscles with the proper nerve recruitment and there still is a load on those muscles then control will be compromised,? Goldfarb, a professor at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, told HuffPost Healthy Living. ?This could lead to lack of force, loss of balance and then could lead to injury if taken too far.?

But does that mean the practice is dangerous or bad for you? No, says Lashae ? it?s a good thing: ?Too many people are afraid to push themselves to the max. The more intense your workout, the more calories you are burning, and the faster you will stimulate a fat burning response in your body. As long as you take the time that you need to recover by resting and grabbing a post-workout protein shake after these classes, there is nothing wrong with them.?

Bottom line: if you are in a class and begin to experience muscle shaking, it?s time to take it down a notch or hold off and rest. Don?t worry that something is wrong ? but you won?t help yourself by pushing through it.

Birth Control Pills: Should They be Available Over-the-counter ...

Many of you may have heard that last week, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), recommended that birth control pills be sold over-the-counter without the need for a health care provider?s exam or prescription. The main reasons behind their recommendation are to increase access and to decrease the cost of birth control pills with the hopes of reducing the number of unintended pregnancies that occur in the U.S.

While we, at Virginia Women?s Center, appreciate the reasons behind this recommendation, we are concerned about the potential repercussions that could arise if birth control pills were available over-the-counter. It?s important to note that an annual exam with an OB-GYN or women?s health nurse practitioner is much more than a birth control prescription or a Pap test.

An annual exam includes a complete review of a woman?s medical history, a pelvic exam, a breast exam, health counseling and the opportunity to ask questions and build a relationship with her health care provider.

Additionally, it may include a discussion on contraception, lab tests or a Pap test. By making birth control pills available without a prescription, many women could miss out on catching health issues or diseases at an earlier time ? when they are easier and less expensive to treat.

Additionally, while birth control pills are for the most part very safe, they are not the right choice in contraception for all women. As Dr. Peter Zedler says, ?There have been many times that patients have come into my office with the plan to use certain types of contraception. However, after we discuss the different options available as well as the risks and benefits of each, they change their minds.? By having birth control pills available over-the-counter, this important discussion with a health care provider may not happen.

One of the reasons why ACOG is recommending this move to over-the-counter birth control pills is because of the cost associated with going to the doctor to obtain a prescription. In the Richmond community, there are several low-cost options for women without insurance. In addition, if birth control pills were sold over-the-counter, they would not be covered by insurance, similar to condoms today. This could actually increase the cost of birth control pills.

At Virginia Women?s Center, we emphasize the importance of preventative care. We see great value in our annual well-woman visits and enjoy partnering together to create an individualized health care plan, which includes a discussion on the appropriate contraception choice for each patient.

New behavioral strategies may help patients learn to better control chronic diseases

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? One of the most important health problems in the United States is the failure of patients with chronic diseases to take their medications and do all that is necessary to control their illnesses.

In a study published online in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, UCLA researchers and their colleagues suggest that physicians take a serious look at tools and strategies used in behavioral economics and social psychology to help motivate their patients to assert better control over chronic diseases. Breaking large goals into smaller, more manageable parts, for example, may help patients better manage diseases such as diabetes, the researchers say.

Diagnosing diseases and discovering effective treatments aren't the only challenges facing health care professionals in the United States, said Braden Mogler, the paper's lead author and a third-year medical student at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

"One of the big challenges is simply finding ways to help the many patients with chronic diseases understand why treatment is important and how to follow it," Mogler said. "Many doctors often lack effective tools to encourage patients in these ways. There is a lot of research from the social sciences on human behavior and encouraging individual change, and this paper shows how that research can potentially be applied to doctor-patient interactions."

In the study, the researchers highlight the shortcomings of some approaches frequently used to try to get individuals to control their diseases, such as scaring patients, overwhelming them with technical information, and focusing on consequences that are far in the future.

They then identify several tools used by psychologists and behavioral economists that can change behavior but which have not been employed often in medical care, and suggest that research on such alternative approaches is an urgent need. These approaches include:

  • Helping patients form very specific plans to achieve their health goals -- for example, identifying the time when they will take their medicines, having them determine what they will do if their prescriptions run out and they don't have a doctor's appointment, and giving them a place to record whether they took the medicines.
  • Breaking big goals into smaller tasks that get patients to their ultimate goal step-by-step -- useful for goals like extreme weight loss, adhering to medication regimens and checking blood sugar every day, or exercising several times a week.
  • Using cash payments to patients as a motivator to get them on track but supplementing that with strategies that will increase their desire to stay healthy and live longer.

If studies show these techniques make a difference, they might improve health and decrease health care costs, said co-author Dr. Martin Shapiro, chief of the division of general internal medicine and health services research at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

"Helping patients get their chronic diseases under control sometimes requires changing medications but mostly comes down to helping patients understand why treatment is important and how they can follow it in their busy lives," Shapiro said. "There is a lot of exciting research on how we can help people change to achieve their goals in other fields, and we believe translating those ideas to health care is an important next step in medical research."

The study's authors found that some of these techniques are being used to a limited degree in health care settings -- helping patients quit smoking by settling on an exact quit date, for instance, has proven more effective than speaking in general terms about quitting soon. Still, many other potentially effective techniques have not been studied in medical settings, and the authors stress the need for clinical trials to evaluate their effectiveness.

(AP) ? Rebels widely believed to be backed by Rwanda and Uganda held their positions in this key eastern Congolese city that they seized last week, letting a midnight deadline for their withdrawal expire in the early hours of Tuesday.

Trucks loaded with fighters belonging to the eight-month-old M23 rebel group patrolled the empty streets of this regional capital, as the ultimatum issued by the regional bloc representing nations in the Great Lakes region of Central Africa came to an end. Earlier in the day, the rebels announced that they plan to move their headquarters to this city of 1 million later this week, another sign that they do not intend to respect the demands of mediators.

For the first time since the fall of Goma eight days ago, the Congolese government acknowledged that it had entered talks with the rebels who handed Congo's military its most humiliating defeat since Goma was last overrun by fighters nearly a decade ago. The two sides were meeting in Kampala, the capital of neighboring Uganda. On Monday, the head of the M23 rebels confirmed that he was en route to Uganda to join in the negotiations.

"We are still waiting to hear about the outcome of the meetings in Kampala. We should receive a document about it tomorrow. The president (of the M23) came back this evening. But given that we do not know what is asked of us we did not move out of our positions," said Bertrand Bisimwa, spokesman for M23's political branch.

As the deadline loomed, the Congolese military appeared to be regrouping in the town of Minova, 60 kilometers (36 miles) to the south, but they appeared disorganized and not in position to launch an immediate assault on Goma. It has left residents on tenterhooks, worrying that they will be caught in the crossfire between rebel and government forces.

Congolese Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo confirmed that President Joseph Kabila had met in recent days with the rebels in Kampala. He said that the government is leaning toward "the avenue of dialogue and peace," suggesting that it is unlikely that the military will try to take Goma by force if the ultimatum is not respected.

"Any action to take back the city of Goma by force will without doubt result in enormous human loss," said Matata Ponyo in a telephone interview with The Associated Press on Monday. "President Kabila is giving priority to the road that will lead to the least loss," he said. But he added: "I think (the rebels) will abide by it (the ultimatum)."

The deadline was issued by the International Conference for the Great Lakes Region on Saturday and gave the M23 rebels two days to retreat to 20 kilometers (12 miles) outside of Goma. It expired at midnight on Monday night.

The regional group is attempting to negotiate an end to the fighting, but it did not threaten any consequences if the rebels don't depart. Uganda and Rwanda belong to the group and they are hardly neutral. Both countries back the rebels, according to a U.N. report released last week, and they would be unlikely to go to war with M23 over the seizure of Goma.

Residents fear that if the Congo army attempts to regain Goma, there will be bitter fighting.

"I am worried the fighting will come back to Goma soon if the army attacks again. Last week, we were so scared. I don't want to go through that again," said Amani Zaliwa, a Goma resident.

In the hours before the midnight ultimatum, armed M23 rebels could be seen driving slowly in a Land Cruiser past United Nations troops stationed at traffic circles in downtown Goma. Others carried out foot patrols on the main arteries. The U.N., which has hundreds of peacekeeping troops stationed in Goma, did little to halt the rebels' advance into the city a week ago, saying that the U.N. mandate did not allow them to engage the fighters.

Tens of thousands of Congolese have fled to refugee camps for safety. Aid organizations struggled to provide them with food and supplies. When a rainstorm hit the Munguna-3 camp, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Goma, children held out their hands to catch the water and drink it. They were quickly imitated by adults.

M23 is made up of hundreds of soldiers who deserted the Congolese army in April. The rebels accuse Congo's government of failing to honor the terms of a 2009 peace deal that incorporated them into the national army.

Matata Ponyo said that the Congolese president agreed to meet with the rebels in order to hear their demands and in a good faith effort to avoid bloodshed. In the early months of the rebellion, the M23 said that the Congolese government had not paid them well, and had discriminated against people from the Tutsi ethnicity, which makes up the bulk of their ranks. A U.N. report released last week, however, said that the rebels were backed by Rwanda, and to a lesser extent Uganda, and most likely were fighting for a greater share of Congo's mineral riches.

Matata Ponyo said that things like greater pay are on the table, but Congo's territorial integrity is off limits.

"These are borders that were drawn in Berlin in 1885. More than 100 years have passed ? no. It's not negotiable," he said.

Rightways: Good property management, maintenance add value

Stratified developments becoming a way of life

As stratified developments become a way a life, good maintenance and management have become an issue.

?

EARLIER this year, a new set of property managers replaced the previous one in the condominium that Siti lives. Not having a current account, she paid her quarterly management fees in cash. She was told that the receipt would be put in her postbox. It never came and she soon discovered that the property management company had absconded with the money.

As stratified developments which include condominiums, service apartments and gated and guarded projects become a way of life, good maintenance and management have become an issue.

Good management and maintenance will improve the value of the asset. This applies to all segments of the property market, be it residential, commercial or industrial.

Hence, the third reading of the Strata Management Bill 2012 on Monday is crucial, says Assoc-Prof Ting Kien Hwa, head of Centre for Real Estate Research at Universiti Teknologi Mara.

?Currently, property management is part of a service provided by valuers, who are regulated by the Board of Valuers, Appraisers and Estate Agents.

The work of valuers can be broadly divided into three areas property management, valuation work and real estate agency work.

This means that property management is a regulated profession and delinquents risk having their licence suspended.

For the last five to six years, managing stratified properties has become an issue, he says. As more of us live in gated and guarded developments, and high rise condominium and serviced apartments, property management is evolving to become a lucrative industry.

Ting says the Board of Valuers is in the process of creating a third register to accommodate property managers. Valuers and real estate agents are governed by two registers and the Board of Valuers are working on creating a third one for property managers.

Says Ting: ?This is a similar situation as in the early 1980s when there were many illegal real estate agents. They were given a one-year period to register with the board.?

Ting says the duty and responsibilities of property managers go beyond just collecting money and managing a property. The word ?managing? covers a whole gamut of expertise and responsibilities. These include insurance valuation, the appropriate rate of service charges to levy on owners, managing service providers like security guards and cleaners, gardeners and managing tenants and rental rates among other duties.

Depending on whether it is a residential or commercial property, some issues may overlap.

To claim that valuers want to monopolise the property management industry is incorrect, Ting says.

?Some parties say they want to liberalise' the profession. Just as engineers and architects are regulated by the Institute of Engineers and Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia respectively, so property managers are regulated by the Board of Valuers because property management is part of the work of valuers. This is the situation in the United States, Britain and Australia. Shall we then liberalise' the achitecture and engineering profession by allowing more people who are untrained to practise as architects and engineers because architects and engineers are monopolising' the industry?? Ting asks.

Ting says this argument to liberalise the profession and cut out the monopoly does not hold water at all.

He says there are currently 8,000 trained property managers in the country and every year, 450 more graduates enter the job market.

The local public universities provided courses in property management in the late 1960s because they knew there would be a need for this.

Malaysian Institute of Professional Property Managers president Ishak Ismail says: ?The Government was visionary enough to foresee a time when stratified housing will become part of the Malaysian property landscape. The first condominium was Desa Kuda Lari in the KLCC area.

?Today about four million people live in stratified projects. About 80% of all the stratified projects are managed by joint management bodies and management committees. About 20% are outsourced and of this about 58% are managed by illegal property managers.?

Ishak said over and above the various issues that fall under property management, two sets of skills are needed the hard skills in managing the property and the soft skills in people management.

He says there is a need to put in the proper regulations to regulate property managers in order to improve the value of our property assets. There must be no conflict of interest because it involves public money, be it house owners or tenants of commercial properties, he says.
