TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Led by a 6-under 66 from sophomore Rocio Sanchez Lobato, the No. 16-ranked Georgia women's golf team grabbed the top spot on all three leaderboards at Florida State's Match-Up Tournament at Southwood Golf Club on Friday.
Sanchez Lobato has a three-shot lead on the individual field, the Bulldogs are a stroke up in the team standings at 290 and UGA and Oklahoma pace the "Match-Up" competition at 6-over.
In addition to Sanchez Lobato's loop, the Bulldogs also counted an even-par 72 from Manuela Carbajo R?, a 75 from Emilie Burger and a 77 from freshman Amira Alexander in her team competition debut. Kailey Walsh's 80 was Georgia's drop score. Collins Bradshaw, who is competing as an individual, shot 72.
"It was a great start to the spring," head coach Josh Brewer said. "The whole team really started well and played well most of the day. We did have a few hiccups on the last few holes. In my mind, Ro was fantastic, Manuela had a good round and our other three scores were average to poor. As much positive as we take from Ro's round, those other scores show that we still have a lot of room for improvement."
Georgia played the front side at 6-under before shooting 8-over on the back.
Sanchez Lobato fell a stroke shy of the school record 7-under 65 Vicki Goetze fired in the final round of the 1992 NCAA Championships. The sophomore from Marbella, Spain, was actually 8-under through 16 holes but double-bogeyed No. 17 before wrapping up the day with a par.
Sanchez Lobato birdied No. 3, No. 5, No. 6 and No. 9 to turn at 4-under. Additional birdies at No. 11, No. 12, No. 14 and No. 16 pushed her to 8-under before the double-bogey 5 at the par-3 No. 17.
"Ro has been solid for two weeks or so in practice," Brewer said. "The practice round yesterday was pretty simple and straightforward and she played well but I certainly didn't see a 66 coming. Honestly, I didn't see much of her round today. I know she putted well and chipped in one time. It was a great day but it could have been even better. She had a bad break on No. 17 when her shot got buried in the back end of a bunker and she couldn't get on the green. She also barely missed a birdie putt at No. 18."
Carbajo R? was even at the turn, mixing five pars with birdies at No. 4 and No. 5 and bogeys at No. 8 and No. 9. A birdie at No. 13 and a bogey at No. 14 were her only non-pars en route to the clubhouse.
Bradshaw started quickly, with a birdie at No. 1, a bogey at No. 3 and birdies at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 9 to turn at 3-under. She left red numbers following bogeys at No. 10, No. 13, No. 14 and No. 15 but birdied No. 19 to get back to even.
Individually, Sanchez Lobato leads Furman's Laura Wearn by three, while Carbajo R? and Bradshaw are tied for fifth, Burger is tied for 21st, Alexander is tied for 35th and Walsh is tied for 52nd.
Tennessee trails Georgia by one in the team field. Rounding out the leaderboard are Florida State and Furman at 295, No. 21 Texas A&M at 296, No. 6 Oklahoma at 298, Texas-San Antonio at 299, No. 15 Notre Dame at 300, Michigan at 304, Kansas at 310, UNC Greensboro at 314 and UNC Wilmington at 323.
In addition, each of the 12 has been paired with another school and play together in a "Match-Up" competition. Each duo's "Match-Up" score is comprised by taking four lowest scores and the highest score on the day for the two teams' 10 competing golfers.
Playing partners Georgia and Oklahoma posted a "Match-Up" effort of 6-over 366 on Friday. The the UGA-OU tandem is two strokes ahead of Tennessee-UTSA and Florida State-Texas A&M. The five contributing "Match Up" scores were Sanchez Lobato's 66; Carbajo R?'s 72; a pair of 74s, which three Oklahoma golfers shot; and Walsh's 80.
Play continues through Sunday. The Bulldogs and the Sooners will tee off beginning at 10:00 a.m. from No. 10 on Saturday, with Bradshaw hitting the course at 10:45 a.m. Live scoring is being updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com.
