NZ and Australian Chartered Accountants NZICA plan... | Stuff.co.nz

A proposed merger of the New Zealand and Australian professional accounting bodies could lead to greater advocacy capability and global influence, accountants on both sides of the Tasman say.

The New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants Australia (ICAA) have proposed a new joint trans-Tasman body.

The two institutes, which are the professional bodies of chartered accountants in their respective countries, have this morning released details of the plan for consultating their members.

NZICA president Liz Hickey said the announcement marked a major milestone in the histories of the two organisations.

The new accounting body would have the scale to significantly improve the educational services and tools available to members, she said, and would open avenues for greater sharing of knowledge and insight.

ICAA president Tim Gullifer said members of the trans-Tasman institute would benefit from a larger and more-sustainable model.

The combined institute would have increased policy formulation, advocacy capability, and global influence, and have the critical mass to offer enhanced training, professional development and global business connections, he said.

"The timing for the establishment of a new institute is right," Gullifer said.

"We need to stay ahead and strengthen the brand and services we offer to members."

Both institutes will consult with members in coming months and members will vote on the proposal later this year.
